Yes, he's reclusive and has his qualms with humanity but he's not truly insane. Same deal in Leroux. From memory he goes out and purchases things -- a dress or something for Christine at one stage -- so he knows the "right" way to interact with people. He's just received so much grief for his face that he's less tolerant of people than is healthy. When he sees Christine and Raoul in AIAOY he flips, yes, but even at the very end he's got the presence of mind to know he's not going about things the right way.

Let's think about it. If Hyde was in Erik's position, he'd punjab Raoul without a second thought before raping Christine.

Thanks for the psychoanalysis Unwinding. Still, Erik is insane, even if he does redeem himself in the end! He killed people needlessly. I think it is quite funny who we have left, mostly the characters that have serious flaws.
