Possibly, but if they were really bothered by that, they could have just called it a concept album. The Broadway Jekyll and Hyde is quite different from the concept album. *shrug*

When it comes to Martin... hehe.
I don't think the lyric changes had anything to do with it. There are a lot of musical recordings out there with different lyrics.

Well the Helpmann Awards have come and gone but unfortunately none went home with Dr Zhivago. Anthony was a no show so probably stayed up in Brisbane true to his Monday no talk day policy. Martin looked pretty spiffy presenting an award and Taneel and Lucy did a beautiful perfornance of "It's no surprise". I suppose what was no surprise was Mary Poppins sweeping everything. List of the winners is here. www.brisbanetimes.com.au/entertainment/helpmann-award-winners-20110801-1i848.html

Disappointing, to think Zhivago didn't pick up a thing. Maybe Zhivago will become a cult classic?

Shame Dr Zhivago didn't win anything. Mary Poppins - okay I haven't seen it but can't imagine really how it could win so many awards. Isn't it basically a childrens show? Anyway Dr Zhivago fans - take heart from a line from Jersey Boys (can't remember it exactly as my mind is too old!!). But basically it says - the Emmys, the Oscars, they don't mean a thing, all that s t can be bought. But this is from the people (talking about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame which the public vote for). So - if there was a Hall of Fame for favourite shows Dr Zhivago would be voted in by you all immediately. And Fredus - yay for Rocky Horror. Still remember seeing it in Wellington with Craig Parker as the narrator and in the last scene he was wearing fishnet stocking, a gstring and stilletoes and walked up a set of steps. Don't think I will ever forget that!!

Very Disappointing that Doctor Zhivago didn't win anything. I haven't seen Mary Poppins either, but my cousins said it was a Magical experience. But I like your idea Injeanious of the Hall of Fame - Zhivago would win hands down!!!!
However Congratulations must go to the winners!

They should have something that the public can vote for, we are the ones who go and see the shows. Whoever decides on the winners for the Helpmann's are absolute idiots. I mean, Matt Lee?? COME ON! Scuffa, was it just Taneel or did Lucy perform too? And is there anywhere I can see a picture of Martin is his spiffy suit? That would help ease the pain a tiny bit.

Seriously? I'm sure Mary Poppins is a good musical and all, but from the snippets of Zhivago that I've seen floating round the internet, I can't believe it didn't win anything.
Looks like LND won best lighting design. I wonder what that looked like.

Tori
LND was a great show the lighting and stage design were really good. I must admit I love Ben as well (not as much as Anthony) I still can't understand if Rock of Ages was able to put off until next year why didn't they do that for Dr Z. Mary Poppins was always going to get votes as it is encouraging youngsters to the theatre. Perhaps Anthony will get nominated to Annie next year.
edit: Jayko I'll see if I can sort a photo of Martin for you I have the whole show recorded. Martin was so nice on Sunday, although I think he must have thought me a bit potty remembering Dream Team. I think Anthony probably stayed up in Brisbane because he has not been well. He didn't perform on Saturday night and I was very relieved to see him on Sunday. We were told had an ear problem due to the gunfire of stage so the flight would not have been good for him.
I think I've said before about changes in lyrics not really mattering when it comes to releasing recordings. Some of the songs in LND are almost unrecognisable now compared to the stage show, both here and in London. The entire show is different here than the one in London. They still sell the CD as a concept album.
I think it would be hard for DR Z to become a cult classic as most people will not be able to remember the songs without a recording to remind them and after the 14th we don't know when or if it will be performed again. I get an empty feeling inside every time I think that I will not be able to hear the music again. The last time I felt like that about a particular show was "Les Miz" but at least with that I could get a recording. Now I don't know how many versions of it I have to listen to.

So Warlow didn't go to the awards? that's silly. I saw Mary Poppins too, LOVED IT!!!! Zhivago is only suitable and appealing to a small audience where as Mary Poppins is an all age thing where families can go, you wouldn't if not can't take your kids to Zhivago. Matt lee was pretty good but nup, Warlow owned his show. Matt can dance sing and act, and without being biased Anthony isn't an all out dancer. His acting was better though otherwise I wouldn't have been crying all the way through the show

Poppy: depends on how old your kids are, isn't there an age restriction or rating for the show my sister went to it and she's 14 which yeah that's okay but little kids with blood violence and sexual references isn't rated G or PG, perhaps PG 13

No. ARGH. I'm working on a show myself and I applied for leave too late, so only this week was available. I would have loved to stay for the last week instead. Was hoping some of you guys might be around at the moment. Very relieved that Anthony was in the 3 shows I watched so far, I was also in Sydney to watch Mary Poppins and both Philip Quast and Debra Byrne were not there.
Going on the lack of awards and potential longevity of Zhivago...I'm not surprised Mary Poppins swept up everything. It is pretty cool, in the spectacular magic of theatre kind of way, eventhough it's the kind of feel good family type thing I'm not very into. While I love Zhivago, I can see how it's quite a dated show, and something that would prolly have done really well about 10-20 years ago during the Les Mis/Miss Saigon/Phantom type era. And I like it because I like that style of show, but musical theatre is going more in the ensemble/pop rock/fluffy kind of show (just look at Broadway right now with things like Book of Mormon). Les Mis is barely running anywhere as an official production. Incidentally, Zhivago might actually find a real audience in Europe, like Germany/Austria/Hungary, where gothic/epic musicals are still very popular.

So jealous Mazza, would love to go to the last show. It's seems so long ago since it left Melbourne. Jayco - it was both Taneel and Lucy on the Helpmanns and now it is on Youtube so if any those clever people who can download these things, it would be great as it is another little snipit to remember the show by. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AY8CBe0jly8

Shak, my kids were 11 and 8 when they saw it( they loved it and my daughter saw it twice), and in comparison to the smut and violence that is around on the news, in schools and television, Zhivago is quite mild! I would so love to go to Bris to see the Zhivago final weekend and try to take my tally to 20 1/2 ...... but I can't! I miss it! *sniff*

@ Fred: I'd almost forgotten about that convo ... @ Shak: I heard Warlow was unwell so he stayed in Brissie, but it's not the first time he hasn't gone to an awards ceremony where he's been nominated for something. He might prefer to keep to the sidelines ((heaven knows if I were in his shoes, I'd prefer to spend the day with the ones I love or just have a quiet day rather than spend the night out at an awards ceremony)). I just know someone's going to say something about his shoes now ...

Poppy have you got some things you could sell? I have sold such a lot lately, including a never used breadmaker, books, clothes, furniture, etc etc. All goes towards my JB obsession! And - I don't miss anything that has gone. My house is far too cluttered so a lot of my unneeded possessions are on Trademe. (Makes it easier for when I move too). Might be an idea for you?

Poppy I agree with you about the stuff kids are exposed to today. I can't bear to watch TV with my boys (18 & 21 years old) sometimes because I'm so embarrassed by the language and subject matter. I don’t consider myself a prude but I am a little old fashioned. Now I know what my parents felt like when we were growing up. Sorry I’ll get off the soapbox now. Talking of selling things to pay for our obsessions I sold 6 of my best sheep to pay for my trips (its taken 7 years to get the stock we have at the moment so it is quite a sacifice). Perhaps you could sell the kids to pay for the trip.(I'm joking)

Speaking of money, someone contacted me on FaceBook and wanted to sell me a bootleg recording of Zhivago for $20. :/

There are a lot of bootleg recordings of JB around - both audio and video. I am waiting for one of JB Australia but no luck so far.
I am horrified sometimes at what my 11 year old granddaughter watches on tv. Some of those music video shows should have an R18 classification. Even the shows on the Disney channel are really for young adults, not children.

We're all starting to sound like our parents. It's only to be expected when we become parents.
Some comments about "private" recordings started to appear on the wanted page I asked for the comments to be removed as I don't want any complaints. By not releasing the cast recording the situation can only get worse, but I do object to people wanting to make money out of it.
edit It looks like someone is contacting people who post on the DR Z FB . There is a comment from someone complaining. I hope this doesn't get out of hand.

@ Mazza looking forward to seeing you again on Sunday. I can't believe I'll only have 2 more opportunities to see Dr Zhivago! Will be having withdrawal symptoms after the 14th until Annie hits the stage next year!
