Spent a fabulous night with Lucy Maunder as she mesmerised an intimate audience of 45 at her cabaret show "Songs In The Key of Black" - Lucy's personal love letter to Irving Berlin. Her voice is like liquid chocolate oozing into every portion of your soul - sweet and warm and completely satisfying on the palate - and her stage presence drew you in and took you to musical heaven. Accompanied by the very talented Daniel Edmonds, Berlin would have been very proud of their rendition of his famous (and not so famous) songs. Every one was exquisite. And to top it off, Luke Joslin joined us for the show - flying up from Melbourne to support this amazing woman. Such a lovely guy and so warm and welcoming. (Love his cheeky hugs!) At the end of the show I was able to spend about an hour with them over a drink, chatting all things Berlin, Lucy, Zhivago, Annie and heaps of other snippets of their lives, and then spend time with her famous dad - Stuart Maunder - as he joined us after his rehearsals for "The Mikado" - a true gentleman, very inclusive and so proud of his girl. Lucy is such a humble, gracious woman - so warm and welcoming and very, very generous with her time and opening up about herself. And Luke - he's just adorable, cheeky and a complete joy to be around. They both are! Wow, what a life I've experienced since 23 July 2011 when I first sat in awe of a fabulous cast portraying life in the frozen wastelands of Russia. That show has opened up so many avenues I never thought I'd walk down, and brought wonderful people into my life who I now get to call friends - including several from this site.

That's wonderful Jeni! I hope this makes it to Melbourne. Can't wait to get the CD; it's up on iTunes but I'm waiting for a hardcopy which according to Lucy will be available through her website soon. And for something completely different, started a sketch of Lucy. Hopefully it'll turn out ok. Can't be bothered logging into the VIP thread, so I'm posting it here:

jayko - It was fabulous catching up with them both. You know how much I admire her so to be able to actually sit down and chat, and meet her dad, was the icing on the cake after such a wonderful, intimate performance. antlove - I found out about it purely by accident. I was just googling her to see if she was in anything new when I saw an obsolete reference to her performing in Noosa and then again in Brisbane. Sooo glad I did, and she said the show in Brisbane was actually her favourite of all because it was so intimate while the others had been to much larger audiences so wasn't as personal. This show was amazing because she literally made eye contact with every single person in the venue, we were so close to her and the room was very small and intimate so gave that feeling of friends rather than an audience. It reminded me of when I went to an intimate dinner with Marina Prior at Noosa - there were only 32 of us and we all ate together and between courses she would get up and serenade us with a few numbers, but she also circulated between tables (4-8 to a table) and would sit down and have a chat with everyone. My brother knows her personally and my sisters and I were invited to join them. I'd suggest you just just keep googling Lucy - I know she's going to Perth soon, Sydney again in November and Melbourne sometime but I can't find the dates as yet. gizelmo - Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow!!! You are SOOOO talented. That is an incredible likeness - can't wait to see the finished product. If you sell them I'm buying one, okay! Thanks for sharing it - especially here so everyone can see... You've captured her so well. Yeah, I got the CD from the show so she could sign it - it's fabulous. She does a wonderful story between songs too, which isn't on the CD so it's even better seeing it in person. Can't find dates for Melbourne yet... Here's a review I did from the show which is posted against her album on iTunes - it was perfection and I am going again in Sydney on November 4 - wouldn't miss it... " A voice like liquid chocolate that oozes into every pore of your soul... Lucy takes you on a sultry journey through the bars and backstreets of New York City to a picturesque village in Russia ... and along the way introduces you to obscure fascinating characters. One minute you're smirking in delight while your toes tap under the table ... and then the next, filled with a poignancy that breaks your heart. With perfect diction and delivered with elegance, panache and a style that mesmerises from the moment she walks into the spotlight, Lucy's stage presence surrounds you as goosebumps dance across your body. I was blessed to be part of an intimate audience in Brisbane to witness her distinctive cabaret show showcasing the fabulous talent of Irving Berlin. This CD delivers the same atmosphere and brilliance - listen to her offerings with the lights turned low and a good glass of red and you'll also wander those fascinating streets. I fell in love with her exquisite crystal-clear voice in "Doctor Zhivago - A New Musical" and now she proves an intimate piano bar is just as much her world as a vast musical theatre stage."

Thanks Here's an update of the progress: jeni: If I finish it in time, I could get a copy to you at Annie I just ordered myself a copy of Lucy's CD. Can't wait to hear it! poppy: If I get the opportunity to meet Lucy, I would love for her to have it. Although I have to say, I'm rather attached to this one. Strange as it may sound, it's probably because it's one of the few female portraits I've done.

Giz - you have a magnificent talent - wow! I would love a copy if you don't mind - would be another one of my treasures. You really have captured her perfectly. And I'm sure you'll love her album. She is a very gracious, generous and humble woman so even if you just gave her a copy and kept the original, I know she would be tickled pink.
What is your job? It has to be something creative, surely!

Thanks Jeni! That's very kind. Hopefully I'll have it finished by then.
I don't have a real job yet, I'm studying science. It's good fun and I suppose also involves a degree of creativity.

Gizelmo you are so incredibly talented. Have you thought about doing portraits like this on commission?

Thank you Inj! I have previously considered taking commissions, although drawing has always been something I just did for fun, and in some ways it's rather cathartic. Well at least it's a break from science. I should think that I would love to, but I wouldn't commit to it for the moment. I'm just really slow and I like to take my time, but that's not exactly something I have a lot of now.

Giz - Please take this the right way, but I cannot believe you're still a student For someone who has so much talent I thought you would be an artist of long-standing - again, I don't mean that rudely but you have such maturity in your brushstrokes and form. Every single time I look at anything you've drawn my immediate thought is "WOW"! All I can say is, I hope you get as much enjoyment out of creating these amazing works of art as we do taking in every intricate detail and feasting upon them. You should insure your hands for a very large sum!

Thanks jayko! jeni: I'll take that as a compliment! people always think I'm younger than my age, well I am vertically challenged...but in any case, this is refreshing change. In all seriousness, I am thankful for all the wonderful positive feedback from everyone here and it makes the process of creating these works all the more enjoyable. So all I can say is thank you!

Just a quick update for those interested in seeing Lucy's show "Songs in the Key of Black". I received a message from Lucy today and she will be appearing in Melbourne at the Chapel off Chapel venues from 16 to 21 October. Tickets aren't on sale yet but I've emailed the venue to find out when they will be.
So there's another date for my diary - will combine it with a trip to see my grandson again.
Can't wait - such a fabulous performer!

Stunning! Absolutely stunning! So (i'll show my ignorance) was that done with just pencil? How long have you been drawing for? Have you drawn pictures of Ant?

Thanks! Yes, I just used pencils. I think I started doing portraits in 2006/07, I draw whenever I have a bit of free time. I have indeed drawn (many) pictures of Anthony, two of which are in his possession in fact.
