UPDATE: I was wrong. It wasn't the 12th of this month, it's the 12th of May. MAY.
Screwed.
Sorry your son's not feeling well, Poppy. It seems so many people have it at the moment. Hope he feels better soon!

@ Marie-Cris: Whatever happens, I never ever have to go to another day of work at P.A Edwards. Whatever happens, things are better than they were. In five weeks, or thereabouts, we'll hunt for somewhere to live so we don't have to do all this driving. I'll get a job. We'll get a friend for Blossom, so we can be overrun with dogs. Everything will be good. And if we had to go to SA urgently, we would be able to do it - promise.

Not a vent - more a frustration. Just found this and am quite disappointed. I was looking forward to An Officer and a Gentlemen coming to my hometown (instead of paying for airfares and accommodation again). I can understand their reasoning if it's not working, but really hope it gets shown around Australia and not just heading to the USA when it's reworked. aussietheatre.com.au/news/officer-dors-world-premiere-musical-given-closing-notice/

Oh no! I was looking forward to seeing it in Sydney in August - well that hope is now dashed. I was waiting till August tickets were released. Obviously people just aren't supporting it. But it does seem a bit funny closing it after only 6 weeks. Ben Mingay should have stayed with Jersey Boys.

Wow I am really surprised especially when they said audience reaction has been positive. I was hoping to see it in Melbourne.
Maybe it would have been better to come to Melbourne first as it seems to be a stronger theatre city but the NSW government threw a lot of money Frosties way do have Zhivago and Officer open there.

Or even Brisbane - both Anthony and Peter Carroll have said when I met them that Brisbane audiences have wonderful responses - which is something Anthony alluded to on the 4BC interview the other day: "Brisbane audiences are fantastic ... They just get it - which is great."
They also commented that there is more audience response throughout a show up here than anywhere else and they feed off it which in turn helps with their delivery, and is why they love coming to QPAC. I felt very proud that they both said the same thing about my city.
I read that that's one of the reasons The Secret Garden opened here in 1995 - the producers were quietly confident that Brisbane audiences would give them a good response, which in turn would make for good reviews, which would then help "sell" it to other cities.
I remember there was a lot of media reaction about two reviews for AOAAG - one from someone saying that there were things they didn't like and then the writer's knee-jerk reaction, which caused a lot of hype in the media. That probably didn't help their cause.

Jema I was reading somewhere yesterday that if the writer hadn't made such a fuss about the review he didn't like and had just kept quiet things wouldn't have been so bad. Me - I don't take any notice of reviews as I like to make up my own mind. A friend of mine went to see AOAAG a couple of weeks ago and said that it was a great spectacle but she didn't like the characters or the lines. But I still wanted to see it. I wonder if the same thing will happen to Moonshadow - that has had some quite bad reviews.

Inj, I agree totally - everyone is entitled to their opinion of a show and as she was an actual paid reviewer for a website she had every reason to say her bit. Then it's up to everyone else to decide for themselves. He was very foolish, I think, to do what he did. I know I'm very partial to my "baby" (novel) but fully understand that it won't suit everyone's taste - just like I don't like science fiction or horror movies or books. Each to his own, I think.
I've seen many "bad" reviews of movies and gone along and loved them, and vice-versa, but I just think it's a shame for the cast and stage crew to put so much in and have high expectations for a full run to have it pulled out from under them. It's a pity they didn't do what they often do in the USA and put on a few weeks of previews with small audiences to iron out the problems and once they're sorted put it in the larger theatres.
Along the same lines, both Anthony and Luke Joslin have told me that DZ is having a significant overhaul - music, lyrics and script - at the moment to suit overseas audiences but thankfully it had its full run in Australia before they did that. As I'm sure everyone on here has gathered I loved it just the way it was, and told both of them that and they readily concurred. (But Anthony did assure me with a squeeze of my arm that I'd love the new version). He added that USA audiences needed it to be different to appeal to their tastes. Obviously that's what is happening at the moment to prepare for the 2014 run on Broadway.
Now where's our cast recording of the original version? ... please Frostie!

I wonder if the same thing will happen to Moonshadow - that has had some quite bad reviews. Hey Inj - it was interesting reading your post again and just thought I'd add this after something that was said the other night. When I went to see Lucy Maunder in Songs in the Key of Black I was talking to her dad afterwards (Stuart Maunder - previously the artistic director of Opera Australia and currently in rehearsals as the director for "The Mikado" in Brisbane) and we were talking about DZ and then An Officer an a Gentleman, and he was saying that he wasn't surprised that AOAAG was pulled - said it needed a whole lot of work done to it although the sets were good. He thinks it will be quite a while before it will be up to standard to tour. I still think it's sad for the cast and minor creative teams. He did say that Moonshadow was a better production but that he felt it needed some tweaks as well.

Jema - interesting. I most definitely think Ben Mingay should have stayed with Jersey Boys - at least he would still be in work for the rest of the year. I have read in several places that the story of Moonshadow doesn't quite make sense!!

Inj - yes agree totally. Bet he's kicking himself now as it's about to start its season up here. And now Moonshadow's been pulled too from what I read in Aussietheatre's newsletter. Seems that the recession is hitting the theatre too from what they said, and could be part of the problem...

Oh no - that means that I don't get to see Moonshadow either. Oh well, will just have to make do (haha) with my absolutely favourite show JB. Its a shame that Moonshadow is closing early. I saw somewhere that they had the Princess booked until the end of August for it so I thought I was fairly safe. I love Cat Stevens music and was really looking forward to seeing it.

Aw, that's a shame! I really would have loved to have gone to see Moonshadow too.
And completely agree with an Original Aus Cast Recording for DZ.

Yeah, I love Cat Stevens' work. I saw a nice interview with him, too - I can't remember which show though - but he was talking about Moonshadow and how it all came about.
Would sooo love to see that Cast Album.
I love most musical theatre and Phantom was always my fav (til DZ came along!) but even it had songs I liked but I don't want to listen to in isolation - there's usually only about three or four songs from any show that really touch my heart, but I have to be honest and say with DZ every single one has grabbed hold of my heart and won't let go. They were perfect in my opinion and I soooo wish there was a DVD made so we could see it again in all its glory - especially now that it's being reworked so much. Thank goodness most of us had the chance to see that wonderful version.
Hey Inj, are you coming to Brissie for our season of JB?

Anything else heading to Brisbane? Are you into plays also or just musicals?

I like both - but musicals are probably my number one seeing I was involved a loooong time ago. I saw Romeo and Juliette (play) in May though and it was fabulous. What about you?
I've just heard Warhorse is coming to QPAC next year - CAN'T WAIT!!!

FINALLY - I can get on this site. I have been having major problems. First my computer here at work had a hard drive problem - it died and it took days for the tech person to get me a new one and then when he finally arrived and set it all up again so much of the computer wouldn't work. I tried to log in from my computer at home (dial up) and although I could see the pages, when I tried to log on it wouldn't let me. Then also couldn't log on for days from work either. So I have just been reading and reading the threads but not able to participate.
But - yay - JB is going to Melbourne again (although I am not keen on the Princess Theatre - no leg room!!!). From what they are saying it looks like the 14 week season could be the end of the run, unless they decide to go to Perth. No hope of it coming to Wellington unfortunately.

Inj - sorry for all the computer problems. Can't live without them but they sure can be pains in the butt when they don't do as they're told, hey!! Do you live in Wellington? If so, I'd love to know where 'cause I lived there in 1973-74. Windy, wet but incredibly pretty on a clear day!
