You know, the more I think about it, the more I've come to the think that maybe this won't be so bad.
I hope that I can explain this clearly...
Years ago, when PoM was being written, ALW said that any sequel would be based on it. Then, when the book flopped, he scrapped the sequel idea. We can agree on those details, can't we?
Now, the question is why would ALW write a musical of something that he knows (almost) everybody hates?
My idea is tha maybe he isn't going to base is on PoM: maybe he just wants to write a sequel where the PotO characters are in New York. A lot of people have said that Erik in Manhattan would be an interesting plot, after all.
The problem with ALW writing this would be, of course, that everyone would say 'he based that on PoM!', especially since he's always said that any sequel would be based on it. If he actually wasn't basing it on PoM, and so didn't credit Frederick Forsyth, then people would just accuse him of plagiarism. So, ALW would be stuck in the position that he'd have to say it was based on PoM, even if it wasn't.
Another thing that I've heard ALW say is that there were things, 'plot twists' I think he said, in PoM that he didn't like, and would remove. Maybe that's how he'll explain the dissimilarity of book to musical?
Basically, we'd end up with a musical sequel, called 'Phantom of Manhattan', that was set in New York, and had very little to do with Forsyth's book.
Does anyone think that that sounds plausible?

Also, remember, ALW didn't actually write PoM. He discussed ideas in the planning stages, but the majority of the blame should probably go to Forsyth.

Is this just wishful thinking? I still don't think Phantom should have a sequel but as long as it's going to, at least I can hope it won't suck more than a black hole.
