If it was a recording made in the theatre surely they could just do a studio recording. We don't care just so long as they make the recording. There are plenty of "cast" recordings made in studios. I feel an email to the producers coming on !!!

See, I thought they were just making a studio recording - a theatre recording suggests a live-feed-like album, which isn't done often, or an actual film. We know they've already got two tracks studio recorded for certain, what's wrong with doing the rest of the show like that?

It would make sense.... and considering they've already got two done..... They wouldn't even have to do everything. A highlights album would make us all happy.

When I filled in the form in Sydney I was told they were making the recordings there for the album. Surely if there was a problem they have had enough time to make new recordings?
It is a sad reflection on Australian productions if they can't sort out a problem like this.
There is a mention of the DrZ facebook about the cast recording.
Doctor Zhivago Australia Hi everyone - we'll see what we can kind out about the cast recording for you. Hope to have an update soon. June 1 at 1:54am

From the Zhivago facebook page: "Hi everyone. The Producers of Doctor Zhivago have decided not to proceed with the cast recording at this stage. Sorry - I know many of you were looking forward to it. As Cassy said, you can download recordings of 'Now' and 'On The Edge Of Time' from the website. www.drzhivago.com.au/register.html" *cries*

Yeah I know. Ouch, but I do like the part that says 'at this stage' there is still some sort of possibility that it will happen. Keep in mind they'd say that a season would finish at a certain time then all of a sudden extend it. This could be a political stunt to wait until Zhivago's had it's run to start selling the album to get more people to see it live for the music, I reckon it's a smart idea but who knows

Well to say I am disappointed is an understatement. As I said, I think it is a sad reflection on Australian productions. Perhaps if enough people point out that this is not a good impression to give of Australia’s ability to produce world-class shows they may re-assess their decision. Here we are with a premier of a truly wonderful show and there is no cast recording. Less than two weeks ago Andrew Lloyd Webber was saying how wonderfully Australia had produce LND and we have this happen.

I know that you can't really compare Dr Zhivago with other shows, as it has only been on in Australia, but remember how there was no Australian cast recording of Phantom, even though Anthony was apparently Lloyd Webber's favourite phantom. There is no Australian cast recording of Jersey Boys even though it has been running for two years now. It just seems as though the producers may think that there would not be enough sales of cds to justify the expense of a recording.

I received an email from Playbill today. Dear Sir/Madam, We thank you for registering your interest in the planned Australian cast recording of Doctor Zhivago. Unfortunately the producers of this show have decided not to proceed with this recording. We realise this must be very disappointing for you. The producers are however making available two songs from the show as free downloads from the Doctor Zhivago website – www.drzhivago.com.au. Or if you would prefer to have the sampler CD with the same two songs, please contact the GFO office – info@gordonfrostorganisation.com and they will post one to you. I am very disappointed especially these days, if they want to cut costs they can just make it available for download. When you look at the Doctor Zhivago website, the list of producers are really long and mostly American. Do you think its because they are going to make more changes before it moves if ever to Broadway and so don't want to make an album at this stage?

Received the same email. So are they not proceeding with the recording or the release of the recording!!
They could call it a concept album. How many versions of Jekyll & Hyde have been published?
The CD of LND is being sold as a concept album.
The two samples would encourage people to buy the album. If people like the music they will buy it.
What about the people who can't get to see the show?

To quote Blackadder:
"I think the phrase rhymes with "clucking bell"."
...
Even if it is because they're thinking of making changes to it once it goes overseas, it would be worth it to have an Australian Concept cast. I wish we could find out more on why it's been pulled.

Well I see I'm not the only one upset. I've had to watch Fledermaus again to cheer me up!!!! Poppy I'm glad you showed restraint in expressing your feelings. I agree with every word. Someone on DrZ facebook said they had actually paid for the CD. Just what are they playing at? Would more expressions of disappointment on facebook make any difference? It is a very public forum.

Problem is, we can't tell for certain who's running the FB page. It might be someone in charge of advertising, or ... I don't know.

I feel that the producers have just used Australia to try out their new production rather that risk the big investment needed to put a show like this on in the US or UK. They said this when they were doing the publicity during the launch period.
Australians have taken up the challenge. The production crew and cast have made the show what it is SPECTACULAR!!!! The Australian public have paid their hard earned bucks to go and see this show many more than once!!! From the messages already on FB some have even paid for the CD in advance. Surely the least the producers could do is produce the CD as advertised.
Wouldn’t it be a nice gesture by the producers to release the cast recording as a big thank you to Australians for making this show the success it is.
I’m sure I’m not the only person to feel this way. If more people voiced these feelings on the DRZ FB maybe it would sink in that people feel used and that the knock on effect of this feeling of abuse is that some may not go to other shows in the future.
Perhaps we could contact the various sponsors listed on the DrZ site and voice our disapproval with them as well.
I’m interested to know what others think. I don’t want to do anything that could be counter productive.

hehehe Blackadder what a great show Anyway didn't Luke post in his Zhivago blog that the cast are starting to move off into other productions? so if that happens we lose the original cast, because once they've left they can't just drop everything and come back to do a recording

Sorry for the sow reply... Mazza, I think anything's worth a shot. If we all swamp as many places as we can.... it sucks that they're doing this. I guess they want a CD with the American cast, but ... blah. I would deifinitely buy an Australian cast CD, but I wouldn't for an American one.
... unless it's still got Warlow in it, but even then, I would be very disgruntled as I was buying it.
It's just ridiculous. We have so few Australian cats recordings of anything. Why the hell can't they give us this! When it's us that's made it a sucess!
Marie-Cris just made a suggestion in the background. Would it be at all worthwhile to form a Facebook group that's specifically hunting for an Australian cast recording? Maybe if they see enough people want it, they'd actually get off their backsides and organise it!

I'm happy to join in with any campaign. I don't use facebook but I'm willing to join up if it helps. Just tell me what we have to do.
Please tell me if I'm getting too pushy. I tend to get a bit passionate about some things and you need to tell me if I'm letting go to my head.

You're not being pushy, mazza! I'd also be happy to join a facebook group for it. It's totally ridiculous not to give us an Australian cast recording. We were the original cast, so how is it fair that we don't get a recording? I also hate the fact that we're being told that we can have only two songs to download from the website.
1.) Two songs? Seriously? Out of how many in the show? Between 15 and 20, I'd guess. Why would we only want two of them when we could have all of them if they'd just record them?
2.) I totally agree with scuffa. Just making it available to download cuts costs. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd certainly prefer to have a hard copy CD that I can actually keep and look at rather than just some files on a computer or MP3 player or whatever. I mean, that's what they're doing to everything these days - music, movies, even books. It makes me really sad thatt everything is going digital.
Not happy!!

So we need some feedback from others I guess. What do others think?
Perhaps we need to move this thread somewhere else?
Is it best to start a page on facebook? Something like "Doctor Zhivago Australian Cast Recording"

You're not being pushy, mazza. I'm sorry I've been rather apathetic the last few days - I've got a horrible cold, and my parents are visiting, so there hasn't been much time. I agree, phalanges, about having a hard copy. I hate that everything is in soft copy now! It's so easy to lose things. I'm willing to start a group or whatever it is in Facebook, if everyone agrees that's the go. Maybe if we can join heads and come up with a couple of explanatory paragraphs for it and all.... It might be better if we have a thread for discussing this.... Marie-Cris? Can we do that somewhere? Edit: Just trying to start a page on Facebook. There's six options to chose from at the beginning. Which do you all think is the most applicable from: - Local business or place - Company, organisation or institution - Brand or product - Artist, band or public figure - Entertainment - Cause or community (Some of those are clearly unsuitable, but just wanted to show all the options.)

Fredus Sorry about the cold. Make sure you drink lots. Do I have to be sorry you have your parents visiting? I'm sure not. I would love my parents to visit but mums health isn't too good.
Anyway, I would suggest Cause or Community. I will start drafting something. I was thinking of a variation on the sort of thing we have all been saying.
We need to think of a good name to use. Any suggestions?

Doctor Zhivago Australian Cast Recording sounds good, we might want to write letters to the heads of this production eg: Lucy Simon, John Frost, playbill merchandising etc. I probably shouldn't stick my head out with letters though coz their already sick of me but the facebook idea sounds good you can also link it with the official facebook page through a comment or something so they know it's there and there sounded like a lot of disgruntled customers that would love to join, then set some goals like a certain amount of people by a certain time, petitions etc.

Fredus
Should we set up a page connected to a facebook belonging to one of us or should we set up a new facebook account just for this? I'm thinking about management and support being spread about rather than left to one person.
I've started drafting some stuff. I would probably perfer to put draft versions in messages rather than post them in the open just until we're ready to put it all out there.
We could ask people to not only show their support on page but also provide contacts to send emails etc. to.
