So, the new Les Miserables movie is coming out very soon. From what I've read Australia gets it on Boxing Day and it doesn't reach little old New Zealand until January.
What are everyone's initial thoughts on it?
After seeing a number of both amateur and professional stage musicals, I find myself having difficulty liking their movie versions (especially that movie). Unless it has Julie Andrews. I love her. I think there are a few reasons for this. One is obviously poor casting. It's a musical, where you sing. Casting a musical with great actors is pointless if they can't sing the big numbers well. Which brings me to the next reason, the way movie musicals are filmed. Until now, what they've done is recorded the album and then acted to the playback. This means that obviously what you see on screen isn't the genuine product, and it often feels kinda fake and empty.
This is where the new Les Mis movie has caught me. They're breaking that mould by recording the singing live while filming the acting.
Just watch for more info:
This has got me really excited. Because they've done it this way, and the cast actually seems pretty darn decent I think Les Mis will actually be a great movie. I think it's only fair too, because Les Mis is such a great musical. By filming it properly it means we'll be in for a more genuine, darker performance. Rather than most of the musical movies we have today which are somewhat... corny.

I saw that vid earlier, it was really interesting!
For me, I think the biggest thing to try and get my head around will be the Thenardiers. They are a couple of my fav characters and I'm rather picky when it comes to them ... The fact that Helena, who did a somewhat okay Mrs. Lovett ((but then I'm no diehard of Sweeney, but I have to agree that Patti did a much better job)), is Mrs. Thenadier, that I think I can live with.
The fact that Sacha Baron Cohen will be playing Mr. Thenardier ... I'm having trouble with that.
But from all the snippets of everyone else's singing and whatnot so far, I think it's safe to say that I'll sit through the whole film without going "what the hell was that?!" too many times. I won't be seeing it in the cinemas, even though I've got a voucher for a Buy 1 get 1 Free with one of the local cinemas, but we're holding onto those for Dispicable Me 2. But eventually we'll find a way to see it.

I have to be honest - I have never ever seen Le Mis as it has never interested me at all, but as I just love Hugh Jackman I might go to see the film.

The fact that Sacha Baron Cohen will be playing Mr. Thenardier ... I'm having trouble with that. Yeah, reading that did surprise me. Who knows? Maybe he'll turn out to be good in the role, just everyone is used to him being in some horrible distasteful crude role.

Another tidbit I found on Youtube:
In depth look the various departments involved in staging the movie, as well as clips from a wider range of scenes. Can't wait to see this now.
