Anthony recorded a long interview with Margaret Throsby on ABC FM last September, which some of you may have heard, but with so many new forum members I thought everyone would like to know that it was repeated last Friday week (11th) for the upcoming Melbourne Pirates/Phantom seasons. The programme will be available to hear again for another week, on www.abc.net.au/classic/throsby/stories/s1920100.htm (although the Real Player wouldn't work for me).

That's funny I was just gonna ask if anyone had this interview - it doesn't play all through on the replay. You should of heard me yell when it wouldn't play to the end! Could you put it up pretty please ;D

As a side note, a true testament to Anthony's greatness, I love the way the ABC - our national broadcaster, no less!! - has him listed as a "Tenor"...
All hail the baritone who has such a range that he can be mistaken for a true tenor!

Ahhhh the ABC don't ya just love the dears! Mind you I didn't love them all that much when Ant's replayed interview just came to a complete STOP - no where near the end! Thanks neh, it's downloading as I type - can't wait to hear the end, it's a great interview so far.

All hail the baritone who has such a range that he can be mistaken for a true tenor! Yes, the ABC has been referring to Anthony as a tenor for some time now - John Cargher excepted, naturally! But what about a true tenor who's singing baritone songs - without transposing - as well as his 'usual' repertoire?! Last year David H. started singing 'Music of the Night' in concert (jokingly asking us not to tell Anthony!) and he's now added 'I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face', 'If I Loved You' and the wonderful 'Open Road, Open Sky' (from The Gypsy Baron)! With his top register as good as ever, he now has an effortless range of 2½ octaves and sounds fantastic, but I doubt he'll ever be called anything but a tenor - except, of course, a tenor extraordinaire! How lucky we are to have two such brilliant singers in our own backyard!

WHAT?! They're in my backyard?! *runs to check* No, no - seriously, it is wonderful to see a brilliant singer's range defy definition and move between two categories... i'd say perhaps Josh Groban attempts the same thing at times? (from baritine to tenor and vice versa) and mabye Katherine Jenkins - she's a mezzo but can do some true soprano stuff aswell (although i know many aren't fussed on her technique.. i like her) And jazzgirl, you're welcome! The end of the interview is the best, coz it's when Ant does Jack Sparrow! *drools*

Since the first choice for Phantom and the actual original Phantom - Colm Wilkinson and Michael Crawford - are both tenors, I'd assume ALW had tenor range in mind when he composed it. But it seems the song is not in the most comfortable range for either tenor or baritone. I'm interested in David's rendition, for he has a higher sound register than Michael Crawford. And it looks David and Anthony do have a lot in common as regards to their repertoires. I'd love to hear the two in concert someday.

Wouldn't it be great if they teamed up to go on a concert tour?!
Having heard the rumour that David will be dedicating the rest of the year after Pirates to working on a CD of Victorian standards (not dissimilar to Tenor & Baritone, from what I understand), it would be great if they both got together to do a Tenor & Baritone concert which had songs from the Victorian album(s) as well as others that suit their voices.
Not sure what I wouldn't do to get tickets to that one...

Not sure what I wouldn't do to get tickets to that one... Although I know who David's partner will be for the new CD, I can't say anything except that it won't be Anthony - Phantom commitments, remember? However, he's a familiar name, and has a rich baritone voice. By the way Greg, I'll be going to the last night of Pirates so I may give you a wave as I pass through the Smorgan Plaza, heading downstairs to the Stalls.

Thanks again for posting that interview neh! Fantastic stuff ;D I love hearing him doing impressions too - but then again I just love hearing his voice... singing, talking - I'll take anything I can get Have you noticed how he giggles in the pirates interview on the DVD? If not, it's when he say's that after he did HMS Pinafore and Trial that they hit the trifector doing Pirates... God how I love that giggle!
