I know this is a very late posting...
After Rob Guest's death here in NZ, they replayed his This is Your Life programme, held here in NZ a couple of years ago.
To get him to NZ, his wife and the organisers here had told him he was doing a show at Sky City, so he had come over to Auckland, done all these rehearsals but was a bit puzzled why the crew didn't seem to be that into it (when in fact they were preparing for This is Your Life!). Obviously, when he was surprised by the host, the crew's behaviour became much clearer!
At the end, the host and audience asked him to sing one of the songs he'd rehearsed, no warm-up, nothing, which he was obviously a bit worried about, but he did it. They then played the closing credits and in the original broadcast, that's where it finished.
But, in this replay, they showed what happened next. After the live show had gone off-air, Rob Guest asked if he could sing a song in honour of all his lovely friends and family, and it was just him and a piano, and it was so beautiful. They played the whole thing right through, and you couldn't help but weep over the loss of such a lovely, lovely man.

I don't know if you guys will be able to see this or not... tvnzondemand.co.nz/content/sunday_2008_10_05_rob/ondemand_video_skinIt's a replay of a story by a current affair tv programme here, celebrating Rob's 1143rd (or something like that) time as Phantom. It shows them putting on his make-up (a bit) and the transformation from Rob to Eric, plus lots of his old stuff from the 1970s, it's so cute. The song he sang at the end of This Is Your Life is the one you hear a couple of times here, where he won the Pacific Song Quest "Hangin' On". Oh, and if you can see it, an ad plays at the front before it begins. I wish I could remember what the song was he sang after that.

Thanks for posting the link farmgirl but it's only for NZ viewers. I did see that ad however, and now I want to go to New Caledonia!

Thanks for posting the link farmgirl but it's only for NZ viewers. I did see that ad however, and now I want to go to New Caledonia! Botheration, it was really lovely too. And how mean that they showed you the ad, and not the story!!! I used to work at TVNZ, it's fairly typical behaviour! It was interesting to see the "face" base going on (you only see it from the back and the left hand side, Rob wouldn't let you see the "bad" side). I have to say, he looked so dashing all dressed up as Phantom.

I had my first (and only) holiday romance there... I was sweet 16 and had read way too much Jane Austen... and as a result had a lovely flirtation with a gorgeous French boy who worked the front desk at the hotel we were staying at. All under the very watchful eye of my mum, I should add! You're a wild woman Nik! ;D

@ farmgirl - if you think that now, I'm afraid you'll be sadly disappointed when you get to know me in person! XD I don't know about that. You've been brave enough to step forward and say hello to Mr Warlow - I had my chance and couldn't do it.
