A special thread to post your random comments on Anthony songs.
My first entry:
You are nothing without me from center stage.
I was just listening to City of angels London cast recording and it's fabulous. The song has a good sense of humor and it's great. Anyway, back to Anthony; the first time I heard Anthony singing this song I didn't realise at all the two voices were both from one man. His command of the two voices and characters is just seamless as to leave you in no doubt that it's a duet by two different singers.
Does anyone here have the same experience? I even made a assumption that Leslie Bricusse invited him to record Jekyll&Hyde after he heard this song. It's interesting Anthony chose this song as his little recording experiment. It had made me believe the two characters were binded in a Jekyll-Hyde relationship before I got to hear the cast recording.

Being alive ( on the boards)
Don't know the context of the song, but I heart his vibrato...
I remember he mentioned once that Sondheim was one of his favorite composers.
ps. That is an interesting montage, master, though I have no idea what the pictures have to do with the song.

David Hobson often sings Being Alive (from Company) in concert, as Sondheim is one of his favourite composers, too. (I actually have this listed as Staying Alive, but since I usually have to write the programme details from memory, mistakes sometimes happen.)
In fact David and Anthony's repertoires have a number of songs in common because their ranges overlap, and so they've also both sung Eisenstein (Fledermaus) and Edwin (Trial by Jury). Furthermore, David was originally going to leave opera to do Chess until OA persuaded him to stay for La Bohème instead, which gave Anthony the Chess opportunity, although unfortunately the Melbourne season was cancelled while still in rehearsal.
One other role they could share may sound unlikely, but David would make a fantastic Phantom - he sings a thrilling Music of the Night in concert - and Michael Crawford (the original Phantom) was also a high tenor so there is a precedent!

Ahhh...the role in Chess is sort of my dream role for Anthony, as he sings Anthem so beautifully. I heard David was to choose between Chess and La Boheme, but I don't know Anthony also had his hand on Chess. What a pity!
I can imagine David do phantom since there have been a bunch of tenor phantoms. And Anthony sometimes sounds like a tenor to me.
Anyway, I'm listening to Hello, Little Girl ( on the boards), another Sondheim song from into the woods. I read somewhere Anthony was given the role of prince/wolf in the Sydney production but turned it down, and he was to sing the role in a concert but had to drop it due to lymphoma. *Sigh* That's another dream role I've hoped him to play.

hehe yes Windbella i don't know what the pics and the video is about for the song i think something about FF12 or something that has to do with Hyde and the charater? anyway do you think i'm right with my opition that he growls and purrs?

Yeah, he does growl a lot, and the song tends to be kind of unhuman for his special flavor of that hissing. But I love that, for sure, hehe.
Random song today: Easy to love (centre stage). I think Cole Porter's style suits him quite well.

Hello Little Girl is on his On the Boards album. I've uploaded that once before for someone but sadly can't do any more uploading untill I get a laptop, so ... if anyone wants to uploaded you know the drill: Music of the Night thread
((BTW; I'm not officially "back" yet, so the voting for the system is still open))
For some reason the song Laura used to scare me. Perhaps it's just the minor sound I fear, but whatever the case, it took me a long time to get used to it.
((oh, and as to You're Nothing Without Me, I had no idea it was him also when I first heard it; I was frantically trying to find the name of the other artist on the cd booklet!!))

I'ce said it many a time but one of my fav moments in Ant's Main Event numbers was when he crooned out "Under My Skin" in the little medley following "What Kind of Fool Am I?" ... to my knowledge, he has never recorded it professionally *am ready and willing to be reprimanded if incorrect*, but my goodness i adore hearing him sing the lines "each time i do just the thought of you makes me STOP before i begin..." - and his little dance! gawness!

I love the little dance number he does in Not Gonna Give in To It
You know I just realised I didn't make ANY comments on Hello Little Girl! I love this piece; his wolfish nature is divine; it's the little in between bits with the growling and the lip smacking and - yes - the howl at the end. *shudders gleefully*The flute ((not sure on this)) hops in the background conjure images of them skipping. Imagine that, a Warlow Wolf and Red Riding Hood skipping arm in arm. I can't help but chuck on my fluffy purple dressing gown whenever I hear this song ((so sue me))

He did dance a lot in the main event. The moonwalk in Granada is a classic too! ^_^
If I loved you - midnight dreaming.
Though not dazzling at the first hearing, it grew on me greatly. The well controlled emotion floats through his smooth tone, and gradually unfolds itself to the high soaring note~~~~just breathtaking~~

WARLOW: You see, you have to roll your "r"'s. FARNHAM: *rolls* WARLOW: What are you doing? FARNHAM: I'm rolling my arse.
lol. had to.
Okay, I've held off long enough, I have to say it: BEAUTY SCHOOL DROP OUT. Why? That falsetto at the end ((very mucho gracias to windbelle for providing the audio to let me hear his parts in Grease)). And those white notes; the way he works the nasal tone ... Okay, so it's mainly for the falsetto at the end, but SERIOUSLY, I've never heard a man hit a note that high and not break himself. I have to say I prefer it to his "Let others riiiiiiiise" bit from Les Miz. That bit is good, yes, but the falsetto give an audio orgie.
Crude but to the point.

I believe the one song that will forever get to me will always be 'Race You to the Top of the Morning'. I've heard a million men sing that song and to this day-only Anthony gets it right. ps-I just got back from New York and saw Raul Esparza sing 'Being Alive' in the new revival of Company on B'way-and he doesn't hold a candle to the recording of Anthony's On the Boards.

YAY! Take that Raul! (no, i don't mean to be like that - he's a fine singer). Ant triumphs yet again! Also want to say that Mr Warlow's 'Unexpected Song' (hehe) is the cream of the crop in contrast to all other versions, to my ears. And i'm not just plugging this lovely site (although that is a nice bonus!)

Too true. I'll never forget the day when my girlfriend played Sarah Brightman's version, then Bernadette Peters' version, only to watch me laugh both of them off the stereo while I blew then all away with my Anthony Warlow version. Even when I coach women singers on this song, I teach them to listen to the specificity of his approach to the song.

Totally agree on your comments. It's unfair comparing another singer's version to Anthony's in many cases, 'cause he pales them all with his superior technique and interpretation.
Anthony's beautiful falsetto at the end of beauty school dropout always blows me off my feet. Never heard a more effortless one in any other recording. And race you to the top of the morning touches my heart with his dramatic passion, in terms of the dynamic emotion and tone-color.

To tell you the truth, Race You to the Top of the Morning was one of my ultimate favs from Warlow because of his play on accents and that smooth falsetto near the end; for the longest time I thought that was the highest note a guy could reach ... I wonder what kind of assistance he needs to reach that falsetto in Beauty School Drop out. *thud* *whip* XD AAAAAAAAAnyway, I also want to comment on Autumn Leaves ((if I haven't already, I forget)). This song, as one well knows, is played to death by singers and instrumentalists ((I went to a wedding last month and the string quartet there [who weren't very good in the first place] played the thing 5 times in the course of the entire evening; and then when they went off for a break they had it going on a CD player!)). I admit I have only heard snippits of Eva Cassidy's version and ... umm ... shoot, was it Cole Porter? I forget. But honestly, Autumn Leaves is a very special one for me; I'm an Autumn Child by nature, I find it beautiful and moving. And it seems to work for "newbies" to Warlow too; I played it to Marley just a month or so after we first met and she loved it.

I warned people I had a demented mind. The problem is keeping it under control.
But that's no fun. ;D
Ooh, "You Do Something To Me" has that lovely whisper/hiss
"You do That voodoo That I knew That you'd do That voodoo That you knew That you'd do So well"
I love that. I also like a number of songs on his Face The Music album; it's my driving cd ((and so the case is getting a bit battered)). Charade is one of my favourites from that, I adore the tempo.

I also adore Autumn leaves. I guess you mean Nat King Cole, Marie? His version is easy to find. Most versions I've heard are pretty warm and light, not as deep and broad as Anthony's.
Have I mentioned Anthem before? I don't remember. It's my fav. number on centre stage. It's so purely beautiful and his soaring passion at the end is just priceless.
And honestly, it almost drove me nut when I saw some guys on youtube had gone so far as to criticise Anthony's vibrato. Heavens! A great Anatoly though Tommy Korberg may be, his vibrato is a bit of a disaster to me, not as half refined as Ant's.

I guess. I used to listen to our Nat King Cole CD all the time as a kid. HOORAY! I found it! And it does have Autumn Leaves on it! I guess I never really paid attention to it back then; I thought Ant's version was the first I heard!
I recall you mentioning that you like Anthem; that was in the early days though, possibly in another thread. But that's okay; with a performance like that, it's good to revive it now and again.

Although i will love Gordon Macrae and his portrayl of Billy Bigalow til i die, Ant certainly gives him a run for his money with "Soliliquay".... and oh my! It's such a powerhouse piece to watch/hear live! I just really seem to love it when Ant yells, hehe! That's why i adore "Transformation" so! Anger becomes beautiful and poetic in Ant's hands... or should i say, vocal chords?! mwhahaha! Me so witty!

I have several recording of Being Alive by many artists, and Anthony Warlow's is the strongest. His live recording of "A Bit of Earth" from The Secret Garden. It is the most amazing recording of him that I have, and I have just about everything available. Wow, brings me to tears everytime.

Some of my favourite songs of his-- in terms of his interpretation of them etc, would have to be:
Unexpected Song (that note at the end... GUHHHHH!) This Is the Moment Confrontation Bring Hime Home Anthem Being Alive Beauty School DropOut
oh gosh, there's many more but my minds going blank. I actually *shame on me* haven't listened to his albums for a while, a fact I shall shortly remedy!
