It's a wise move on his part, but this means we'll have to revise our last sydney show plans!

Hmmm Interesting....brave choice indeed to jump on this earlier and announce in the media (rather than really have to defend later).
This seems to be what was essentially happening any way - just in a less structured way....otherwise Simon and Roy would not have had a go ever.
We know several people have seen Simon and Roy step in, several times. You just can't hold understudies for two years and not have them perform on a semi-regular basis even if they are being paid..... My thought is that regardless of who they are, you would never know when they just might decide to break contract and walk for the opportunity to step in to the main role elsewhere, or for something that presents an even better career opportunity.
Job satisfaction for everyone is important. I guess what I'm trying to say is that producers have to keep everyone happy!

He's been reading the LSS thread! XD
No, really. I agree with emony in that it had to happen eventually. No one can perform at that level of intensity for such a prolonged period of time. Simon and Roy are there to pick up the baton and, of course, Alex needs to have a shot too. He's probably chomping at the bit to prove himself.
At least this way we know he'll be doing all the evening shows. Maybe LSS should be revised to SLSS (second-last Sydney show.) I was going to see both anyway, but I know others might be less carefree with their money.

Definitely a wise move; we'd hate to see him get flustered over the next year' or so, after all. I would assume that he would to the last show in each location, as it's a rather special show ... dammit, I'm sorry, I wish I was "in" enough to be able to talk to him about it for you!

I'm not sure that he won't be doing the Sunday afternoon shows. It says he will cut back from 8 to 6 shows a week (and let's face it, it would appear that he hasn't been doing all 8 shows a week anyhow), which only means missing Saturday and Wednesday matinees. I'm not the least bit surprised, because after seeing him perform, I can not imagine how he can sustain a performance of that magnitude (both vocally and emotionally) for every performance in a week for another year. I think he would have to have even more super-powers than we had credited him with to do that!! I think it was very brave of him and John Frost to come out and say what we had all suspected anyhow. There had been quite a few rumblings in the press, on radio and on the Yahoo Group about his non-appearance for several shows so I guess the word was getting out that he was "struggling". Mind you, I saw him last Friday night, the day before he lost his voice, and Anthony dearest, if that was struggling, I'd give anything to be able to struggle like that!! It was one of his better performances I had seen. Incredible. I couldn't believe it when I heard he hadn't done the following night's show. It will be interesting to see what this news does to ticket sales. I get the feeling from the press reviews that Brisbane hasn't embraced "Our Show' nearly as much as Melbourne did. And some of the comments left on the Courier Mail website have been less than complimentary about Anthony and his decision. PHILISTINES!!!

I agree - I think it's a very wise move on his behalf. Sure, the older generation who probably organise bus tours etc for day shows will be a little peeved, but I've never liked the idea of seeing a musical in daylight (just doesn't feel right), so naturally I think focusing his energy on 6 awesome performances a week is a very sensible idea.

In Melbourne he wasn't doing Wednesdays, Sundays and the occasional Saturday matinee, to the best of my knowledge (and that of the ushers!),and I think it's a smart decision on his part, although I felt it was rather inevitable- Phantom would have to be a draining show, especially when you put so much into it! Also, it's highly likely he'll still do the final Sydney show- he hadn't done a Sunday show in a good few weeks yet did the final Sunday in Melbourne, and will probably continue that pattern. He IS the Phantom, and should be farewelled from each city at the final show. So I'm sticking with my LSS! XD

I have to admit, you scared the bollocks out of me with this thread.
I had these awful visions of another expensive journey and, despite having the best POTO seats I've ever had, having to endure the show without Anthony.
I fly to Brisbane on Tuesday for a Wednesday evening show, then return home on Thursday for a night shift Friday night.
It seems I have pretty rotten luck with Anthony shows, particularly where travel is involved - which is every single show I've ever been to!!
I know I won't be confident until I see his form appear behind the mirror and hear his voice.
I am a very well worn bum-on-seat and I know that anticipation is a huge part of the experience. I've often said that my favourite time in life is that second or two after the house lights go down, before the music starts. Now THAT'S living!
Roll on Wednesday.
Cheers MuLo

I find muttering under your breath on the way to the theatre helps!!! I was staying in Brookfield (western suburbs of Brisbane) and I think I muttered "please let him be on" under my breath all the way in to the city. About 40 minutes. I'm sure wearing the same clothes and jewelry as the last time I saw him helped!! Oops, now I really DO sound like a loony!! XD

"I didn't think Anthony had to sing all that much given the overall length of the show" . . .
Arrrrrghhhhh, you moron!!!!People like this make me so. Incredibly. Mad. I cannot even form complete sentences I'm so angry right now and the proper words to express my rage seem to be eluding my grasp, which could be because my hands are shaking with immeasurable fury!...My sentences are becoming dangerously run-on. Where's Sandy? I think I've burst an artery...

Is she in Brisbane again? Unfortunately I couldn't answer when I first saw that; I just went beyond anger. I've calmed down a bit now so all I can say ((without going into an explosive rage)) is that person is an utter twit. ... *coughdirectedatreviewercough* YOU GODDAMN fking MORON! HAVE YOU EVER STEPPED ON A STAGE IN YOUR LIFE?!

Don't worry dear ones, I'm not in Brisbane, just busy this afternoon with my mother's 70th birthday. Everyone's gone home now, after consuming splendid Italian food (pasta, pizza, veal saltimbocca and salad followed by luscious affogatos) made by moi. Am consuming the last of the red wine before I lurch into bed! I was so tempted to leave a few of those morons on the Courier Mail website a message, but could think of nothing to say that woyuldn't involve words that shouldn't be used in polite company (with the exception of the company here of course)!! You can probably imagine the one I found the most inflammatory!!! What a complete tosspot!!!!

It's their own fault for being so cheap they wanted the $10 (ish) discount the matinee brings! XD

It really is an interesting phenomenon when you compare this to other productions in the world. I don't think in the west end or broadway the audience would complain much if they get the understudies. They probably don't know who is the principal either. In the last German production about two years ago, they had four musical stars as principal phantoms all through their not-that-long run, while you have only one Anthony Warlow here. It seems to me that the Brisbane audiences are indeed pretty unfamiliar with the theatre world.

Brisbane, Sydney and Auckland - BUT WHAT ABOUT PERTH
Don't tell me that we're going to get Phantom WITHOUT Ant AGAIN!!!!
*wanders off muttering* I was lucky enough to be in touch with one of the public relations members for POTO and he unofficially, non-commitedly, and completely off the record told me that a Perth run is definitely possible, but it would not be until the end of the tour!
Remember, this is a two year tour and the end of the tour will not be until July 2009! So, hold your breath, count your blessings, say your prayers, give to the poor, adopt a stray, be kind to fate and the Producers may actually remember that Perth exists.
West Aussies are starved for entertainment, but when it does arrive it is embraced so warmly. Perth people LOVE the theatre.
I have promised, not if, but WHEN POTO arrives in Perth, I also will fly in to see a show or two.
If Andre Rieu can bring his huge orchestra show to Subi Oval, then POTO can make the trip as well!
Cheers MuLo

What is it about Andre? I can't turn around without hearing his name, for years' I've been seeing his DVDs and CDs plastered in every store ... Just for that I'm very reluctant to actually listen to his playing.
I thought the ending at Perth thing was a definite?

Well I hope it comes to Perth because I don't want to miss out on seeing POTO. I am saving up so I can see it 3 or 4 times..............
I love living in Perth but I do get mad because we miss out on a lot of good productions etc. I will be praying my little heart out that it will come over here.
