Oh Jeez, no ... I can't believe he's changed his mind - AGAIN! He's been on and off with this thing for years'!
They'll probably do some sort of kidnapping scenario where Erik snatches the boy and Christine and Raoul have to face him to get the boy back ... this is reminding me of that 1992 cast version of Phantom ((I'll be damned if I'll leave it as it is, I'm still tracking the CD!)). Maybe they kill him off, Christine and Raoul live happily ever after, yadda yadda yadda. Or maybe they'll make it so that Christine chooses Erik - for how long, I don't know.
I would love it if Erik got Christine, but I don't think I'd be prepared to see that actually come true. I really don't know.

No, I thought he'd given up on this! How can he write a sequel? I get the feeling that even seeing Christine again would kill Erik. He redeemed himself by letting her go. Now I haven't read Phantom of Manhattan but I hear it involves Erik stalking Christine.
...Um, no. Been there, done that. Erik already played the obsessive voyeur. He's not gonna go back to being like that!
Rage, ALW! Just... rage! *swear*

Unfortunately I have had the displeasure of reading the Phantom of Manhattan. It was very very bad. It basically involves Erik creating an elaborate plan to lure Christine to America because he wants their child and it is just a lot of crap!! Unwinding is right - he redeemed himself when he let Christine go. Unless he changes the story dramatically I don't think it will work.

If it's the latter, for the love of Sharpies, they didn't consumate their love! Erik's been locked in a cellar for God knows how long, he's rendered a quivering mess by a simple kiss and he can barely bring himself to touch her. Find me room in there for a sex scene, ALW! Go on! I dare you! If it's the former and he merely wants to have a child with Christine... ye Gods, he's not a randy teen!

Yes, the child is Erik and Christine's - it just didn't make sense. And at the end Christine is shot and dies and Raoul just hands the kid over to Erik as if its no big deal. It was just really bad!!

[/color] Just out of interest, Jayko, if someone was to, hypothetically of course, be in the market for very very bad literature, where would one be able to acquire the awful "Phantom of Manhattan"? And who wrote it??

MuLo, I was fortunate enough to find a copy of it at my local library so I didn't have to pay any money for it!! The author is Frederick Forsyth. I am not sure if book shops would carry it, I think it was released in the late 90s.

^ PoM!Erik: - "I tire of these damp cellars. Some fresh air would do me the world of good. Time for a holiday!" - "The mask won't attract unwanted attention anymore. I'm sure the world's a changed place." - "They'll never notice I'm missing a nose." - "I'll find some way to cart the organ along with me." - "Never mind that I actually kinda like owning the Opera Populaire." - "Obviously, Christine's in denial." - "I hear Manhattan boasts riveting architecture." - "Everyone loves a serial killer." - "Walking around in public isn't a daunting prospect for a recluse." - "Of course I possess the social skills to apply for a job!"
real Erik: "She got pregnant how?!"

One petition at a time; if we get Ant recorded, we don't have to suffer Manhattan ... we don't have to watch it ...
And we might curb some of the fan-girl minds to a better Phantom.

Oh god I hope they don't turn it into a movie!! Especially not with Gerry!!
Just so people know the story (hope this doesn't spoil it for anyone who actually wants to read the book - just skip the rest of this post):
Erik gets sent to America by Madame Giry where he continues to be a recluse and never leaves his house. He goes on to build opera houses and other buildings and becomes mega rich. On her death bed Madame Giry sends a letter to Erik telling him he has a son with Christine. Erik writes an opera and lures Christine to perform in it. Christine, Raoul and the son go to Manhattan and Erik tells Christine he wants the child. Some crazy guy that works for Erik wants his money but realises he won't get it if Erik has a child so he goes to kill the child but kills Christine instead. Raoul (who hardly plays a part in the novel at all because they are in America and he doesn't speak a word of english) hands the child over to Erik to live with him. The End.
That is pretty much the story from what I remember - I've tried to block it out. Also I read on another forum that he will stop all productions of Phantom around the world when he releases the new one to stop competition between the two - has anyone else heard anything about that?

Well, I'm thinking (in my own distorted way) that the only person who really has a right to writing a Phantom sequel would be Gaston Leroux himself*. I know ALW wrote the musical but it was adaption of the book still...I dunno, I liked how Phantom ended...
*Yes, I do realise Gaston Leroux is dead XD

Couple of thoughts......
- Will he have to rewrite PoTO to include a scene that makes it obvious that Erik and Christine did *do the business*
- If so, can I audition for the role of Christine??
- You'd think, if they were going to go all the way to America, Raoul would make an effort to pick up a bit of English, or at least, I dunno, CARRY A PHRASEBOOK like the rest of us do when we go overseas!!!!
- If Erik has picked up a New York accent, I shudder to think who Hollywood would get to play him. Jerry Seinfeld!!!

This sounds weird... why on earth would they need a sequel? I mean, aren't we supposed to imagine what would happen afterwards? As in, maybe Christine and Erik had a child, maybe they didn't, but if they ever EVER shut down Phantom because of it, then I will seriously freak out. Everything is hunky dory the way it is at the moment, not some people trying to come up with a sequel, which will probably be the complete opposite of Gaston Leroux wanted in the first place. Just leave it be, let people enjoy it for what it is, and let their minds start a journey It ends romantically and beautifully... why ruin it? P.S. if Erik and Christine did have a child, I seriously think that it would be cute.

To jog everyone's memories (because I know most of you have repressed all recollections of the '04 movie): during the ending of Music of the Night Gerik lays a fully-clothed Christine down in that stupid swan bed; what's with that? At the start of the very next scene, Christine is clearly shown without stockings so...
Yes. Gerik raped her while she was sleeping.
Because Erik would so do that... *rolls eyes*

*giggletantrum* haha yes, he totally raped her while she slept....
Although i do recall in one of the phantom books he rapes her with his music....

Actually, that stocking scene has become infamous amongst fans of the movie. There was speculation for a time that Phantom of Manhattan would be a sequel to the '04 film courtesy of that continuity error. If it was an error, that is. You know, I really wouldn't put it past ALW to have set the whole thing up as an implied sex scene or barring that, once he heard the fans mention it he might've gone, "Ooh, now there's a thought!" and started working on PoM.
He "rapes" her with his music in Kay's Phantom. Not sure if it's the same in Leroux. I haven't read that for a while...

i dont think that happens in Leroux's book. And i never even noticed the stockings in the movie, too used to the musical i guess XD
Actually an interesting little bit in the movie is when Gerik is taking christine down to his lair and he has a horse, i never got that till i remembered in Leroux's book Erik steals the best horse at the opera...

This whole sequel concept is too much of a nightmare to consider, considering the content of the "PoM" novel.
If ALW is so determined to do it then for goodness sake let common sense prevail and compose an entirely new story.
However, one nagging thought lies at the back of my tired mind; what type of intellect reads a 1000 page novel spanning 30 years and a revolution and then thinks to itself: "What a great idea for a musical, I think this will work." Thank goodness Boublil and Schonberg had that vision.
The same could be said for two poorly written gothic novels based on horror, murder and mayhem - let's make a stage musical!! (POTO and J&H - obviously!)
ALW read TS Eliot's silly little poems about cats, the next thing we know, what would become the most successful musical of all time, commences in the West End.
I guess if anyone can take fodder and turn it into magic then ALW is one of very few men able to do it!
I would rather it was left right alone, don't mess with perfection!
Cheers MuLo

Well he better keep away from The Raven; that's my project.
((No, not as a musical, but I have plans))
And you know, it could be worse ... he could insert the mind-controlling rats like in that other version of Phantom of the Opera ... I really ... don't like that film.
Oh, and as to the bed thing, Goodwin got into the boat when the lights went down on the 8th, and so did Marina on the 9th; she hadn't back in November though. Has this been a recent change or are they doing it randomly? Because I rather liked Christine waking up where Erik had left her, and with her waking up in the boat it means Erik's shown some of the humanity he's not meant to have or understand.

When I saw it in September, I swear I saw her (Julie) being carried into the boat...
But then in January, she (Ana) fainted and was left on the floor...
So I wasnt sure if I had remembered wrongly from the first one, or if they just change from time to time, like you suggested???
