Okay, so I saw this on Saturday and it was so damn wonderful that it was... just.... OMG!!!!!! Anyway, I can't be bothered to write a whole review again, so read my livejournal: cintyfran.livejournal.com/2006/09/12/I could go on forever about how amazing Anthony was. It was just Jack Sparrow on stage! I couldn't believe it!! and it is coming out on dvd. ;D

I'm a dork, and should have technically posted the following here, so it shall be appearing twixe on this site - i hope no-one minds. Feel free to skip over it; i'm really just fulfilling my sense of proper placement. MY PIRATES REVIEW: It was bloody awesome; so much fun and such a parade of talent everwhere! Ant rocked my socks off and into the orchestra's pit and right up to the top box and the back onto my feet again (my socks had quite a fun time of it) with his performance; my mate Cath said it all sounds like a lazy imitation but she just doenst understand his sheer BRILLIANCE. Everyone loved him.. he's just so darn lovable! I couldnt stop smiling for sheer adoration of him.... it sounds so childish and lame, i know, but it wasnt/isnt a schoolgirl crush, more so a very very strong sense of pride and joy when i watch/listen to him....... oh my! he rocks! my socks! hehe. Taryn and David were so cute together, and their voices .... oh! bliss! Dav's still got theat romantic hero part down, even if he wants to be rid of the type-casting. And Taryn, she's so lovely. If only i could be a soprano... though then i'd be attempting to compete with Taryn and that's a big no-no! The supporting players were all excellent - my program's upstairs so i'll come down tomorrow and re-write these parts with the performers names and be more detailed. But i loved it - i loved it! I had a great time. Well done Aus Opera; take a bow!

The good news is, Pirates is coming to Adelaide. The bad news is, Warlow isn't. DAMMIT, IT'S JUST NOT FAIR!!! I just finished listening to Kerri's interview with Stewert ... uh ... Lambert? Uh ... can't remember. The Musical Director for Pirates. He announced that DAVID CAMPBELL would be Adelaide's Pirate King when it kicks off in Jan. Don't get me wrong, David Campbell's good, BUT I WANT MY WARLOW!!!! I have money set aside specifically for ONE show, and no matter what the show is about, it's gonna be put towards one of WARLOW'S. *sniff, curls up to DVDs*

Dam it - i'm sorry Marie. But at least it isnt too long to wait and there'll be the dvd - which means Ant on pause, on slow-mo, backwards, his numbers rewound a million times....... sigh!

I'm so so sorry Marie! That's just so disappointing! I've never even heard of David Campbell- if that had happened to me, I would have chucked a fit and gone off crying and... ugh. gone to Opera Australia with a gun and threateneed them!
thank goodness for the dvd.

Thanks guys; you cheered me up. Oh, a lot of teens would know Campbell from when he went on Dancing with the Stars, but I first heard him back in '04 when my English / Drama teacher lent me several CDs for a project. One of them was the No. 1# Musical's Album with all Australian artists; he's got a couple of songs on that. Philip Quast's "Stars" is on it too ... I've got the burnt copies somewhere ... Yeah, I hear that CD is extremely hard to find. Lucky I burnt it off when I did then, eh?

I borrowed that cd from the library once. at the time I ripped it but I only took the Anthony songs off it because they were the only ones I was interested in. I might borrow it again and rip the whole thing.

Oh, "pooh-pooh". XD Conversations always go off track. And for the most part, I'm the one responsible. But that's just me.
All right, pirate talk; my sister gave my mum a bundle of clothes to sort through, as she was considering throwing them out. One of them was a black singlet with multiple skull and crossbones on it. I'd've so worn that to Pirates had Warlow been the one planned for Adelaide.

Hehehe.. it was my sister's b'day yesterday and we had some family friends over for dinner. Anway, i was sitting at the kitchen table with some of them, and both Shelley and Nikki are Ant fans (they got to see him at the Main Event) and for some reason - i attribute it to too much sugar! - i randomly said in the middle of a chat "Pirates! Program - i'll show you the program!" ... understandably, they looked at me like i had 3 heads, until i managed to explain what the hell i was talking about.

Okay, now that the show's been up and the performance was shown on the ABC, what are people's opinions of it?
Sadly, I got bored. Warlow didn't seem to emit his usual greatness; I did get a laugh from "The Enz" though, and other little tid-bits like John Bolton-Wood's line: "Let's see, what would Sir Joseph say?", but apart from that it wasn't altogether ... much. And "I Am A Pirate King" ? gah! Where's the charm? And where's that sneaky little line of a key change?
I'm afraid it's time for the Pirate King to walk the plank. Prey Phantom is less disappointing

I'm with you ^ about I am a Pirate King. Someone very kind uploaded On the Boards and I have that on my computer. The version of it on the CD (even if it is a random song taken out of context) was better than the live one I thought. I felt that the POTC impersonation was done at the expense of Anthony's voice. that said, I haven't seen it done any other way so I loved the rest of it especially the wheel-on trees.

The Jon English version is still available at the ABC Shop, I think; might be worth a look ((I think I saw it in my youth but I can't quite remember ... I do remember the TIGHTS)).
Yes the trees were cute. And did you notice he had the same whip he used in HMS Pinafore?

Well, I do hope Anthony had chosen to use his own voice instead of mimicking Depp. But still, luckily you guys got to see him on TV while I'll have to wait untill the DVD come out to see for myself.

It's somewhere in between when he sings, but when he talks it's in mild Jack Sparrow mode ((apparently, according to others who have seen it)). During the credits the channel announcer said that it was available at the ABC Shop; whether she meant THAT performance or the Jon English one I'm not sure, but if I get the DVD from my sister for Christmas then it should be out now or soon

I enjoyed it, both seeing it live and watching it on tv, but i understand the criticisms listed above for sure. And i must confess that Ant's Pirate King on the cd was vocally much stronger than this one, and i do believe that his JD impression had a lot to do with it - although i personally found it a gem to watch physically and facially.

I think we're all agreeing on a 50/50 review here; it was good in its own ways, but maybe not as good as we wanted it to be.

I've just got the DVD and had a brief view of it. ( I should have got the DVD much earlier...but that's another story.) No time for a longer review because of my soon coming test. Just some simple opinions to share. As I've never seen any other version of Pirates before, I find it pretty enjoyable. The set and the costumes are gorgeous, and indeed quite disney heavy, but I'm not saying if it's a good thing or not. I can understand the idea of updating the classic, to draw more people to see the opera. I heard that Anthony is better live on stage as he is such a professional stage performer, but anyway I'm glad it's filmed, to offer some pity to us oversea fanatics. For the extra, the backstage interview is absolutely a lavish treat! Anthony is soooo charming!! (Yeah, we know he always is. ;D) I fall for the gestures of his hands when he speaks, and the way he hits the piano keyboard. Well, I've gone a bit fangirlish now, so I just stop.
