More videos guys!! I just found this on ABC's website: www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/07/26/1989437.htmThere'a small video clip of the title song, quite incomplete but better than nothing. Also if you click on the small photo, a bigger version would pop up. :-) EDIT: Here's the download link, as always... EDIT AGAIN: Moved to VIP board.

windbelle I'm with neh... you are Queen of July!!! Thanks for the link, it's so great to see and hear part of the show. Their voices blend well together and Ant sounds fantastic! I just love Ant's flourish with the cape and his hand gestures... he's gonna be one sexy Phantom!

Looking at my diary Friday night, I noticed I had nothing on for Saturday night. I knew it was the Official opening of Phantom so I thought maybe I would cruise by and check the crowd arriving in case I saw a celebrity or two. On a whim, I checked the Ticketek website and there was a seat in the stalls Row N but was obstructed view. What the heck - I saw it on the 19th and I just want to listen to Anthony and experience a opening night, so I snapped up the ticket. Opening night and the Princess looks picture perfect. The red carpet was at the centre doorway and the spotlights were shining. The Australian celebrity scene is pretty minor but there were a number of TV personalities and actors as well as the politicians and corporate heads. After the crowd slowly made their way into the theatre, the director Arthur Masella came on stage to welcome the guests then went onto say how there was a very bad virus that was going through the cast that affected the vocal cords. Many cast members were suffering - particularly Anthony Warlow. Oh no!!! Groans and gasps from the crowd. But he said - Anthony was going to give it his best shot so just bear with him. Wow, as long an Anthony was going to do it I still was happy. When Anthony began to sing, first thing I noticed was that he was miked a bit louder. He got through Phantom but there were definite changes to notes in Music of the Night. After hearing Anthony at the first preview when he was in full voice, you could tell the subtle differences he was making to nurse his voice through the performance. A couple of times you could also hear his breathing which you never usually hear as Anthony has excellent technique. In the speaking parts, you could hear the "cold" in his voice and in the second half, there were a few times in those power notes, like when singing here (as in the POTO is here) when the note broke up. But still, despite these difficulties it was still a great performance and Anthony received the standing ovation and accolades he deserved for struggling on. I would not be surprised if he missed tomorrow's matinee or a couple of performances to get over this bug. So everyone, please send "get well" thoughts Anthony's way. I took a couple of photos of the Princess theatre but please excuse the quality as it was with my phone camera. When you look at the front facade, you will notice a large photo of Anthony in the middle. I also took a close up of this but there is lots of reflection from the spotlights. This photo is in the program which is available from Playbill. Anyway, here is the link for the photos and I apologise for the long winded post but I just wanted everyone to know our man is a trouper and the show must go on!! s182.photobucket.com/albums/x287/Scuffa/There is also an article in the Herald Sun which has link to a quick video interview with a couple of classic Anthony quips. www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,,22152417-5006016,00.html

Oh the poor dear; I'd hug him even if he was ill. Glad to hear you're having a good time and that he's battling on even so. Thank you for the footage windbelle; the footage was all jerky on the site and it often froze on people closing their eyes so they looked drunk XD

I just hope he's not pushing himself to hard... obviously he wouldn't like missing shows - especially right at the beginning of the run, but he needs to rest and get better.

Exactly. And good on Pyrce for taking up the mask when needed; also interesting to see they've got an understudy for the understudy, but do they have an understudy for the understudy's understudy? ((I just wanted to try that))

As I understand, big productions like this normally have two understudies for the principal roles. And a little reminder here: if you go to the gettyimages.com and search Anthony's name, you'll find plenty of press photos. editorial.gettyimages.com/Editorial/Editorial.aspx

Hi all,
I'm new to Unexpected Song and just wanted to join yr discussion of PoTO and the FABULOUS Mr Warlow!
My sister lives in Melbourne and when she heard the news last year that he was going to play Phantom again, immediately rang me AND sent me the news clippings because she knows that I love Anthony and have always wanted to (at some point before I die) be lucky enough to see him play Phantom.
I flew from Perth, W.A. to see Mr Warlow and was so excited about it that my sister joked to all her uni friends that I didn't come to see her, I came to see him!!!
A friend of my sisters had attended the final dress rehearsal of PoTO on the 18th and they had Anthony's understudy for most of the show due to illness. They also said that he did go on for the final couple of scenes that day. So, understandably, I was worried that after going to Melbourne especially, I wouldn't have him for my booked show (Tuesday 24th). By the time the day of the show rolled around, I couldn't even muster excited jigging or happy dancing, I was THAT paranoid that I didn't want to get my hopes up only to be disappointed.
Luckily, to cheer me up on the 24th (because I had lost my enthusiasm and good-cheer even though we were seeing PotO that afternoon) my sister went to the theatre and checked that Mr W would be performing that night. Thankfully, he was and Oh My God, am I glad it was the case.
I thought that he was amazing. His singing was wonderful, particularly when he let rip on the big strong notes in POTO and his reprise of All I Ask of You at the end of Act One.
You could tell that he was sick though because all of his high, upper register notes were shakey and scratchy. And whilst I agree that at times his acting was slightly melodramatic, that was counter-balanced (in my belief) by the sheer weight of his stage presence. Every time he walked on stage there was a noticable shift in the life and energy of the show. Every body else (even Christine) paled in comparison. To me, there was no choice Christine honey, Phantom!!!!!...stuff Raoul.
I started crying at the end of Point of No Return with his reprise and was crying again at his final "It's over now/the music of the night!" riff. I was blown away by him as a live performer, and as mentioned, he did seem overly touched by the standing ovation that was duly given to him.
The poor sod, it is clear though that the whole weight (and appeal) of this production is squarely on his shoulders (lovely though they are) and to be ill must be killing him.
I hope he gets better soon, it does suck to be ill and performing!!!
Thanks for letting me rant everyone. I am so glad I joined the forum!!!!!! And thanks for all the media stuff, I haven't been able to find some things and have been going insane for want of info!
Hugs, Jacobi

G'day Jacobi, WELCOME TO UNEXPECTED SONG!
I'm glad you enjoyed the performance and I'm glad you're glad you joined our quirky little family! I hope you enjoy your time here and we can get to know you better - and you can get to know us, of course. We're not that bad.
Well ... they're not that bad.
I bite.
jk.
*shifty eyes*
Anyway, welcome and enjoy!
